While there are more members of the Weller family, we lined up the 12 Year, Antique 107, and Full Proof. With all three built around Weller's famous wheated bourbon recipe, this was a fun opportunity to see just how much difference proof and aging can make. The Annual Gala continues to be one of the highlights of the HighFlight Bourbon calendar. Another month, another three bourbons to put through the paces. No specific theme this go-around, perhaps a little"spray and pray" method to test our palates? The weather finally broke, opening up the patio for some fine cigars along with tasting 3 unique whiskies. We started out with a very different whiskey, Delta Dirt Distillery Sweet Roots Arkansas Brown, which is a highly rated whiskey distilled in accordance with all bourbon criteria except their added ingredient is sweet potato roots on top of the corn, rye and barley. Our May meeting was a Nod to the Kentucky Derby, complete with Hot Brown Sandwiches made famous by the Brown Hotel in Louisville and 3 fine Kentucky Bourbons! We started off with the Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Edition # 152, then tasted a somewhat “new-kid-on-the-block” New Riff 8-year Straight Bourbon Whiskey, founded 12 years ago in Newport, KY just across the river from Cincinnati.
